A little challenge...

I thought of this the other day based on TuxRadar's "You dare us" section in their podcasts (though it's more a case of them daring themselves).

The idea is that at the next meeting (assuming we can get at least one device on the WiFi), we call up distrowatch and either select, or have selected for us, a distro we've not used/installed before. We then agree to install the chosen distro under VirtualBox between the September and October meetings and blog our experiences here on Elgg. We could also decide at the September meeting on a set of applications to install on each distro, to help us evaluate the ease of use of the package managers and the availability of applications.

This serves a number of purposes:

  1. If ever we're going to have some sort of "installfest" it will help us to have experience of a number of distros and the pitfalls that crop up when installing.
  2. It encourages us to use Elgg more
  3. It provides us with a resource to refer back to should our numbers increase and we get enquiries about xyz distro/application

Comments/suggestions welcome!

Here's my favourite OS upgrade for this month - I know it's not Linux but I think it should serve as a model for all future Upgrades/reviews.

PS If you have absolutely no sense of humour don't click on this link.

Hehe. That's one very angry Mac fanboy!

And we thought Ubuntu were bad at changing the interface!

Wow, he paid $30 for that?!  Well anyone who pays $1000+ for a iMac / Macbook probably deserves it!  Back in Linux-land, we get this kind of experience for free! :-)

Great idea Paul about the "you dare us" concept.  I've only really used Suse, Sabayon/Gentoo and Debian based distro's for the last 5/6 years, so it would be good to try something totally new and outside of my comfort zone.

Lookind forward to it!
